We mean Thaaat time of the month which arrives every month and leaves a bloody trail in its wake. Yes, periods. And all the hullabaloo and drama associated with it. Totally legit, we tell you. Something that destructive should be accompanied by all the fanfare but no, it does not have to be painful.

Enter period cramps that almost always accompany Aunt Flo. They are like the twin sisters that nobody likes to see the two of yet they are inseparable. In fact, it is those painful cramps that usually herald the arrival of your periods. So what actually are they and why do they always have to make an appearance?

According to Mayo Clinic, “menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) are throbbing or cramping pains in the lower abdomen. Many women experience menstrual cramps just before and during their menstrual periods”. They go on to say that “during your menstrual period, your uterus contracts to help expel its lining.

Hormone-like substances (prostaglandins) involved in pain and inflammation trigger the uterine muscle contractions. Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more-severe menstrual cramps”.

So there you have it, and judging by this explanation, as long as you continue having periods, these cramps would surely make a monthly appearance in your life.

How to manage or minimize the pain?
shutterstock
Now that we know that these buggers are not going anywhere, it is wise to explore some ways that the pain can be lessened or made bearable. So even though the prospect of curling up in bed seems plausible, it comes at a cost of foregoing work or missing out on hanging out with friends.

Hey, we do have a life to get on with too. So let’s see what can be done to make the pain manageable.

1. Hot drinks
shutterstock
The number one remedy that can be done without any special utensils is too make yourself a cup of hot milk, black tea or green tea. People have used herbal ways to treat pains for a long time before allopathic medicine made a big bang.

Hot drinks are proven to provide comfort and warmth and add to it the healing properties of some herbs and you just might have a good go to recipe for menstrual cramps. Chamomile, peppermint and ginger teas are famous for their pain relieving and comforting properties.

Add in your favorite brand of tea in a boiling pot of water or steep a teabag in a mug of hot water, however you make it, the hot drinks can help you feel better.

2. Essential oils
hutterstock
Massaging on certain body parts is a tried and tested way to relieve pain and induce the feeling of comfort. Add to it the benefits of essential oils and you would be able to relax and take your mind off the fact that you are currently in the process of shedding your uterine lining.

The aroma of essential oils has a therapeutic effect on the mind and combined with the caring touch of someone you love makes it all the more alluring as a home remedy. Get your partner to pamper you for a day, (or two, or more!) or take the help of your best friend.

The oils that are most beneficial in improving circulation and reducing tenseness and pain of the muscles are cypress oil, ylang ylang oil and lavender oil.

3. Hot water bag or portable heat pad
shutterstock
The remedy which grandma swears by. And it does carry some weight too! Lying down with a hot water bag relaxes your muscles and loosens them up. Which means that they do not remain tensed anymore and you can feel a little relief from the cramps. A heating bag or pad can also be helpful in relaxing the myometrium, which it turn, reduces the constriction of blood vessels and improves the flow of blood your uterus.

A study was conducted by Zinger, who is a clinical instructor at the University of Cincinnati in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The researcher found that the patients who had applied heat pads or hot water bags noticed that there was a significant decrease in the amount of pain over those four hours.

Zinger goes on to say that “the percent reduction in pain compared with the start of treatment was 27% at the first hour, 43% at the second hour, and 79% at the end of the fourth hour”. What more reason do you need when your Grandma’s remedy has been backed by scientists too!

4.
